Our candles are made with some of the best candle wax available. A good quality wax is important because it determines how your candle burns and for how long. Different waxes also throw scents differently. We have chosen a wax that is nicknamed "the scent wax" because of its marvelous scent throw. We scent all the wax in our candles so you have a scented candle from top to bottom. We use either papercore or zinc wicks so you have a completely lead-free candle.
Please make sure you read this advice before burning your candles.
For best burning, all jar and votive candles should not be extinguished until liquid covers the top – this will be about 2-3 hours for a small candle or 4-5 hours for a large candle. This will prevent your candle from only burning a hole down the center of the candle and not giving you the full burn-time for your candle.
Container may become hot. Handle carefully. Always use a protective surface as bottom of jar can become hot. Extinguish flame before replacing lid. Never leave a burning candle unattended! Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Do not allow flame to directly touch side of container. Discontinue use when ½ inch of wax remains.
Do not pour off liquid wax. Let your candle cool, then trim your wick and light again.
To prevent smoking, trim the wick to ¼ inch prior to each use and keep it trimmed.
If your candle smokes, extinguish it, trim the wick and re-light.
Keep the wax pool free of foreign objects, such as wick trimmings and matches. They will interfere with proper burning and are flammable.
To prevent fading, keep out of direct sunlight.
Snuff out candles with a candle snuffer. This prevents wax from spraying and the wick will stay centered.
Do not burn your candle in a draft (i.e. under a ceiling fan) – this will cause your candle to burn unevenly.
Our candles are made of paraffin wax. I hope to someday make soy candles but I haven't had the time to experiment with and perfect a recipe for a good quality, 100% soy wax, soy candle.
Soy candles frequently advertise that they are "soot free", "burn ... longer than comparable paraffin candles", and "are environmentally friendly." Soy wax is “environmentally friendly” since it is a natural wax.
Soy candles do, generally, soot less than paraffin candles but if you’re wanting a “natural” candle, check the ingredients. A lot of soy candles are actually a blend of soy wax and paraffin (sometimes as much as 75% paraffin).
Also interesting to note - unless a company uses natural fragrance oils (like essential oils), the fragrance in the candle is unlikely to be natural or "environmentally friendly" - fragrances like hot apple pie, merlot, ocean, chocolate, etc. are chemical fragrances; you can't get them in a natural oil.
Soot comes from poor quality chemical fragrance oils, too much chemical fragrance oil, or from paraffin wax – how much soot depends on quality of paraffin wax, the wick, or the chemical fragrance!!.
